Vientiane Morning Market

Talat Sao (ຕະຫຼາດເຊົ້າ), literally "Morning Market," is one of Vientiane's best-known and busiest daily markets. It pairs a modern, air-conditioned shopping mall with streets of traditional stalls selling Lao textiles, gold, electronics and souvenirs.
Talat Sao is generally open every day from 07:00 to 17:00. The indoor mall and supermarket keep longer hours, while individual textile and gold stalls are busiest before noon and quieten in the late afternoon.
The market is best known for hand-woven Lao sinh (traditional skirts), pure-gold jewellery, silk, antiques, electronics, mobile phones, and a wide range of souvenirs. Fixed-price shops sit alongside stalls where friendly bargaining is expected.
Patterns on hand-woven cloth are never random: the Naga serpent means protection, the elephant deity stands for strength, and the lotus for purity. A sinh is made of the Tin Sinh (decorated hem) and the Hua Sinh (main body); weaving styles and motifs differ from Luang Prabang to Champasak, silently signalling the wearer's region and identity.
Talat Sao is one of Vientiane's best-known areas for gold trading. In the traditional Lao Baci blessing ceremony and wedding customs, pure-gold jewellery is more than wealth — it is a vessel of prayer and protection. To gift gold is to gift a blessing.
Look for lacquerware, woven baskets, silver charms, hill-tribe crafts, packaged Lao coffee and tea, and miniature naga woodcarvings — easy to pack and ideal gifts.
Money changers and gold shops around Talat Sao exchange US dollars, Thai baht and euros, but rates and licences vary booth by booth — always compare the boards before you commit, carry small denominations, and confirm the buy/sell rate. ATMs for Lao kip (LAK) are scattered around the complex. Rates shift daily, so check the board on the day rather than relying on a fixed number.
The air-conditioned Talat Sao Mall houses a supermarket, clothing and electronics stores, phone shops, a food court and clean restrooms — a cool, convenient break from the heat and a good place to compare fixed prices.
Talat Sao is two experiences in one place. The traditional side — open-fronted shophouses and sidewalk stalls — is where you haggle for textiles, gold, electronics and fresh snacks; hours here are flexible and many vendors take a midday break. The air-conditioned Talat Sao Mall, by contrast, keeps fixed shop hours, set prices and a food court, which makes it the easier choice in the heat. Give yourself time for both: the stalls for character and bargains, the mall for comfort and comparison.
Talat Sao sits on Avenue Lane Xang (Th Lane Xang), about 1.2 km east of the Mekong riverfront and a short tuk-tuk or Loca ride from most city-centre hotels. It is also the city's main bus hub (see below).
The Talat Sao Bus Station (ສະຖານີລົດເມຕະຫຼາດເຊົ້າ) next to the market is Vientiane's central point for local city buses and many provincial routes. It is the easiest place to catch an intercity bus to Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang and the south; arrive early, buy your ticket at the counter, and keep an eye on your luggage.
Talat Sao is a daytime, indoor-and-street shopping market focused on goods; the Vientiane Night Market is an open-air riverside evening market focused on food, clothing and atmosphere. Many visitors do both in one day — mornings at Talat Sao, sunset at the Night Market.
Tuk-tuk: The most popular way to get around Vientiane. Always agree on the price before boarding.
Loca: A convenient and safe ride-hailing app in Laos.
Walking: Just a 15-minute walk from Talat Sao to the Night Market.
Wattay International Airport (VTE) is about 3–4 km from the city centre and ~6 km from Talat Sao — roughly a 15–25 min drive. Common ways to get there:
Airport taxi / private car: official taxi desks outside the terminal; a direct trip to the Morning or Night Market costs about 80,000–120,000 LAK (~US$4–6). Agree on the price first.
Loca ride-hailing: book a Loca ride at the airport — transparent pricing, can link a foreign card; the best value option.
Airport bus / shuttle: cheapest, but limited frequency and requires transfers; best for light backpackers without much luggage.
Tip: there is no metro or rail at the airport. After arrival, change money or withdraw LAK so you can pay fares and shop at the markets.
